I have been watching a lot of movies recently. One thing that strikes me about them is their predictability. Hollywood is slightly better in this regard but still pretty predictable. Heroes dodging bullets aimed straight at their heads/hearts, heroines falling down niagara-like rapids only to be saved by a passing crocodile or something. I have wondered (and wanted) for a long time, about making movies that are totally random. Sorta like telling kids the abrupt stories. What? You don't know what those are? Ok, here's an example:
One day long, long ago, a little girl called Red Riding Hood was going home through the forest in the evening. Suddenly, a big, bad, ugly wolf jumped right in front of her and scared the bejesus out of her. Poor thing, she ran and ran and ran, for a longggggg time. The ugly wolf kept right behind her. When she was a few feet away from her door, the big wolf caught up with her, knocked her down and quickly ate her up. End of story.
The poor kids are usually left a little confused but you have satisfied their insatiable demands for a story and can now get back to watching your TV program or reading your novel or whatever. If the unsatisfied kids pester you again, repeat performance with another suitably short and abrupt story.
Now scale that same thing to the adult version: You are in the theatre. Most of an unusually well-made psychological thriller is done. In the climax, the hero is now confronting the evil villain who holds a gun to the heroine's head. Hero throws away his gun. Villain, then proceeds to shoot him straight in the head. Hero drops dead. Heroine screams. Villain shoots her too in the head. End of movie.
Realistically, such a movie would probably not sell, but boy, would it be different!
